  • Festival Organisers Announce Amazing Science Events for Free

Organisers of the Amazed by Science festival have announced the final event programme for their free science festival, happening across Cheshire and Warrington during May half term from Saturday 24th May to Sunday 1st June.

The festival aims to make science fun and exciting for children and their parents, with a focus on attracting young people to the wide range of careers in the field of science and technology. The programme includes a spectacular live Science Show with Air Products at Crewe Lyceum, a strand of bee trails and bee-keeping demonstrations at several venues including Norton Priory, an ‘Amazed By Maths’ coding event sponsored by MBNA at Chester Racecourse for budding digital masterminds; and a chance to meet an Astronomer in your lunch time at Jodrell Bank.

To find out more about the free events available, parents are being asked to sign up for alerts and information on the website at http://www.amazedbyscience.com/ or by following @amazedbyscience on twitter or via the facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/amazedbyscience

The festival has attracted sponsorship from several big names from the science community including headline sponsor Siemens and science and technology companies such as Urenco, The National Nuclear Laboratory, Waters Corporation, Sellafield Ltd, Peel Environmental, Atkins, C-Tech Innovation and the Cheshire and Warrington Enterprise Partnership.

Katrina Michel, Chief Executive of Marketing Cheshire and a founding partner of the Amazed By Science festival, said: ‘This brand new science festival is a fantastic opportunity for families across Cheshire and Warrington to experience hands-on fun whilst learning more about science and technology over the half term holiday. Cheshire is an incredibly science-rich destination and the event programme gives us an ideal opportunity to showcase what’s happening here, with the help of our venues and sponsors. All festival events are free to attend and what better way to spend time with the family than at a whole list of fantastic attractions across the region.’

Venues involved in the festival include Jodrell Bank, Norton Priory, Daresbury Science Park, Delamere Forest, Chester Zoo, Macclesfield Silk Museum, Warrington Museum, Chester Cathedral, Reaseheath Agricultural College, Tatton Park and the Hack Green Nuclear Bunker.

  • School’s Out at Bolesworth International

For the first time this year the team at Bolesworth International has invited local schools to join in the fun for free by attending their new Schools’ Day happening on Thursday 12th June. Representatives from Bolesworth Estate visited Tarvin Primary School with Bolesworth’s mascot horse to launch this new element of the show. Pupils were asked to take part in an open competition to name the event mascot. Teachers at schools across Cheshire are being encouraged to send their school’s suggested name to Anna Du Pre at anna@bolesworth.com before the competition closing date on Friday 6th June. The winning name will be announced at the Schools’ Day following the opening ceremony, being hosted by ex Liverpool and Manchester United footballer, Michael Owen.

Set in the spectacular grounds of Bolesworth Castle in the heart of Cheshire, Bolesworth Estate will host this four day international show jumping event, attracting riders from all over the world.  The event runs from Thursday 12th June to Sunday 15th June and includes a star-studded opening ceremony, an open air pop concert and finishes with the feature Grand Prix event on Sunday at 2pm.

On Thursday 12th June school groups will be invited to watch world class riders compete for silverware. Many pupils will even get the chance to meet several famous riders including British Olympic gold medalist Nick Skelton, former Olympian John Whitaker, local celebrity Geoff Billington and Billy Twomey, Ireland’s highest ranked show jumper; in person following the Opening Ceremony.

Andrew Davies, Head Teacher at Tarvin Primary School said: “This will be a wonderful opportunity for our children to experience a world class equestrian event on their doorstep and to meet such global stars of sport; it is such a fantastic event for the county. The children are very excited to be attending the Schools’ Day and with so many educational activities on offer as well as the show jumping it will certainly appeal to the explorers and the adventurers among them.”

For the first time groups of school children will be able to enjoy the equestrian highlights of the event as well as experiencing the wildlife and countryside focus of the day, this includes learning the skills of den building, sculpting and land art with local  outdoor environment experts, Earth Skills Project. Other activities include discovering the wonderful world of bees with the Cheshire Beekeeping Association, a chance to identify various new species with Broxton Barn Owl Trust and getting crafty with the Forest Explorers in the ‘Schools Out’ marquee. The show will also be filled with opportunities to experience animal magic with an exotic reptile show, micro pigs, birds of prey, Newfoundland rescue bears and parrot displays.

Children will be given discount tickets to enable them return to the show over the weekend with parents and siblings to enjoy a fun-packed family day out. With food, fashion and lifestyle exhibitors galore, plus several adrenalin fuelled activities available such as stunt bike displays, funfair, land & water zorbing, indoor caving and an 18ft climbing wall; there will be something to please every family member.   During the main show grandstand seating and parking are free with adult entrance tickets, priced at £10 online and children under 12 go free.

For more information about obtaining passes for groups for the Bolesworth International - Schools Day on Thursday 12th June please contact Alison Sharp at the Bolesworth International Show Office on 01829 782 210 or email:  alison@bolesworth.com.

  • The Malpas Arts & Literary Festival 15th - 18th May 2014

MalfestWe are delighted to have Barbara Dickson, Fairport Convention and Mark Radcliffe & Foes to entertain us at Malfest this year, as well as The Co-op Brass Band Northwest with The Malpas Ladies Choir. There will be literary gems from Felix Francis, author of The Dick Francis novels and Debbie Morgan among other top class authors.  Sunny Ormonde(Lillian Bellamy from BBC's The Archers) is bringing her sell out One Woman Show and there are Memoirs and Memories commemorating The Great War. What with The Peter Wheeler Short Story Competition, The Art Exhibition and bands every night at The Red Lion,  Malfest - now in its 4th year - is set to be another huge success.

The aim of The Malpas Arts & Literary Festival is to bring a wide variety of accessible culture to this lovely rural area, allowing the people of Malpas and its environs the chance to see class acts at affordable prices. Being on the boundaries of Cheshire, Shropshire and Wales, Malpas has a need to forge its own identity and Malfest has attracted some big names to put Malpas firmly on the map over the last four years. The Peter Wheeler Short story Competition inspires children and adults from a large area to explore their writing and literary talents, and The Art Exhibition, which has previously featured local and national artists, is showing work by students at The Bishop Heber High School for the first time this year. For four days each May, the village is full of authors, poets, artists, orchestras, choirs, bands and performers, helping to encourage an interest in performance, music and the arts generally.
